Holy crap it's been a long damn time since I've uploaded anything to this blog. I'm such a bad parent....Anyway, I thought I would reward the 2 people who ever looked at this thing with a few newish pieces...the pages are from the June 27th released ALL GIRL COMICS published by Shadowline. I thought it might be cool to show the inked up/pre-colored artwork. well, issue #1 of I HATE Gallant Girl came out this past Wednesday....
did any of you pick up your copy? let's hope so. if you did happen to

really like #2 and #3. this drawing was something i did this morning to
get the old creative juices flowing before diving into the work. for
whatever reason i decided to go the old fashioned way with this one. pencil,
ink, and marker on good old bristol sketch card. i draw these things up and
sell them at shows, or requests, if anyone is interested. more soon.

...that's the name of the comic from Images Shadowline, that I'm working on. I'll have order codes for previews when they're available next month. Issue 1 will be on the shelf November 12. It's slated to be a 3 issue series, unless sales are so good we can
keep going. The story is written and created by Kat Cahill, a wonderfully talented
young woman whom I'm thrilled to be working with. Kanilla Tripp is providing the colors, and Jason Hanley is lettering...I couldn't be in better company for my full issue(s) debut. The above sketch is our main character Renee. I'll throw up some
sample pages when it's ok to do so....stay tuned true believers, the show's just getting started...

you might not be able to tell with this piece, but i've been f-ing around with the
brush settings in photoshop. i would like to thank bobby chiu and kei acedera for the

i woke up this morning and thought, "why haven't i pulled out my old prisma color markers in so long?"....these two sketch cards are the resulting product. i've never drawn the scarlet witch before, but i thought it turned out alright. the "magic effect" didn't work as well as i would have wanted, but it's too late now. of the two, i think i prefer the batman one most.

Back from Wizard World Chicago

Well I'm back from Chicago.
I woke up Monday morning to read the terrible news that one of my heroes Mike Wieringo had passed away on Sunday from a heart attack at the age of 44! I never had the privalege of meeting 'Ringo in person, but he was always nice to me on the boards, and had nothing but encouragement towards my artistic endevors...I'm feeling a great loss with his passing. He made it "ok" for me to have this cartoonier style you all see above. I can't help but be choked up just thinking about the fact that I won't be able to check his sketch blog every other day anymore for new inspiration. I will NOT remove his link from this page either.

....anyway...
I drew this picture out of boredom at Wizard World Chicago. It started out as just the Thing, and grew from there. Overall, I'm relatively pleased with this one since I've never made it a point to draw the Fantastic Four before. I had a few commisions over the weekend, so all in all not too shabby.

I would like to say that I am available for commisions if anyone is interested, contact me through email, and it will be on a first come first serve basis because I still have a webcomic to put out twice a week, a day job, and at least a couple other projects coming down the pipe.

i know it's been a long time since my last post, but i've been busy with the new day job(lots of overtime) plus jeff and i are working on at least two proposals for print, brat-halla has gone to twice a week, and now we're going to work on arazel and xarenia as a "web-comic"....

hey...
i was in dallas texas for free comic book day on saturday. did i see you?
friday night was freakin' awesome. i got to participate in a live art show with david mack, james o'barr, and jim mahfood, just to name a few. i was honored to stand next to everyone and paint...
saturday was spent in front of zeus comics underneath a tent. i got to meet some brat-halla fans and hopefully make some new friends. all in all, it was a great weekend.
anyway, this was one of the first drawings i did on saturday morning to kind of get the ball rolling for the day....

hey. it's been a bit since my last update, so i thought i show a little of what has been "keeping me busy"...

it's rough page layouts for a story that i've had spinning in my head for awhile. a detective story involving the strange and scary. kind an x-files "thing". it's something i've always wanted to do, but never made time to flesh it out. hopefully this little exercise will help with that. i'm also trying to evolve my style a little bit for this one. it'll still be simplified, but i'm hoping to get more "realistic" than i have in the past. i don't want to go with super realism, 'cos i just don't like that. i've always thought that if you want to see something that looks photorealistic, take an effing picture. anyway, these first 9 pages are an attempt at setting up the story and characters, if it's a little hard to make out it's because these 9 pages were layed out on one 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of computer paper. blah, blah, blah.

since the comic came out this past wednesday, i figured that it would be safe to post this up for the world wide web to see...if you haven't already, go pick up Bomb Queen vol.III issue #1 at your local comic shop....well, what the hell are you waiting for?

the main story is penned by Jim Valentino and the art is masterfully drawn by Jimmie Robinson, i was honored enough to grace the back of the book with 5 whole pages! every one involved with the book was so impressed with my pencils, that if was decided to just color right over the top of them...sans ink! cool.

Blizzard warning...

well, winter is officially here and it blows...
here in west michigan (the armpit of the midwest) we are now in a blizzard warning.
what does this mean? it means i may post a few new pieces of art over the next couple days, as
"they" advise to not leave our homes.

anyway, i haven't drawn spidey in a long ass time and i was recently inspired by Ryan Ottley's blogging
of ol' webhead....
i'm still trying to learn how to ink like j. bone, and i kind of swiped this shot from him....sorry, man.

a "banner" couple of weeks....

well, it's been a hell of a week for Jeff and i. our webcomic Brat-Halla over at graphicsmash.com has been growing in views quite drastically. the last i heard from Jeff, we had almost hit 70000 views just yesterday. it was like 45000 on tuesday! in fact, over the last week and a half every day has averaged around 20000-25000 views! we're not saving the world or anything, hell we're not even pulling in any bank, but it still feels pretty good to draw a crowd. the increase in views has come from a recent string of ads that Jeff has put out on the world wide web. these ads involve a series of banners showcasing the webcomic with art. Jeff had used some clip art from the series, cropped to size and formated. but i thought maybe i should "whip up" some new art for the ads.

Dawn. A character created by Joeseph Michael Linser. A character i'm not entirely familiar with. i know she's got kind of a "cult" following and all, but honestly i've never read any of her stories. This was worked up as a drawing challenge, so i looked up some reference pictures online and went to town. i didn't go as dark as Linser has in the past with it, but i was going for more of a straight up sexy feel anyway. Dark and creepy doesn't always work with my style anyway...so there it is. Dawn.

this the page 163 in my webcomic Brat-Halla over at GraphicSmash.com...this went up live today, but not quite this version. i gray scaled this one myself. first attempt, to see how comfortable i would be "coloring" sequential pages...it took me about two hours to color this page (which is a lot of time considering that the coloring isn't very good), so all in all start to finish this page took about 4-5 hours. i'll keep practicing.

well, this is for a draw off over at the digital webbing site. there were no real "rules" other than the piece had to have these two characters in it. i decided to go ahead and ink it right away, for practice i may work up some photoshop colors. if you guys get a chance go check out the other contestants at the digital webbing forums....

Hey all.
My writer and friend Jeff Stevenson got me a DVD for Christmas, "Concept Design with Feng Zhu- vol. 1: vehicle design" through the Gnomon Workshop. I watched it this morning as a warm up exercise, and these are what i came up with. i've been notoriously bad with tech and vehicle design, so that's the purpose of the DVD. i want to be better at it, and from these first two drawings(while not great) show an improvement already. so keep you eyes peeled to this page, as i'm sure there will be many more designs showing up in the future. after all, practice makes perfect.

Cover-redo?

this was done as a teaser/cover for the upcoming webcomic. it's a swipe of another unused cover by the one and only Ryan Ottley ("Wya"). Ryan had worked with Jeff in the past on a story called Dungeon Bears...read it, it's fantastic. anyway, this is supposed to be a cover for the new series, if a webcomic could have a cover :)

Some of you may have heard that i landed a five page backup story in the March released Bomb Queen (series 3) #1.
Before the final script was written, i drew this page up as kind of my idea on how to start the story. This is the queen getting ready to go out for the day in the "retro" costume i came up with. Later it was decided that we should use the original costume for storytelling purposes...but i can't talk too much about it, you'll have to ask the comicbook store to order the issue so you can find out. Anyway, i hope you enjoy the never used page because it will never see the light of day other than here.

Silver Surfer

When most kids start reading comic books, they start where either their older siblings or parents left off.
Dad read Avengers and Spider-Man, while Timmy was a Batman or Superman fan. I didn't have those
influences growing up, so I had to discover heros on my own. I remember like it was yesterday, Eric (my friend) and
I were in Bookworld on Main St. in Ripon, WI when I saw him. The Silver Surfer. He was shiny and chrome, with more power
than the gods, and he surfed the spaceways pondering the greater good. He would always try to find ways to solve all his problems without having to resort to his near limitless power. Facinating stuff. The art was by Ron Lim (the first artist I ever traced, sorry Ron)...and thus my love affair with super heros was born.

well, this is probably new to some of you. the character is Emissary from Jim Valentino's Shadowline Comics.
I drew this up for shit's and giggles, then found out that the wonderful Manny Trembly of PandaXpress and Sam Noir fame decided to color it up for me.
didn't he do a fantastic job? much better than my infantile coloring.
anyway, check out both Emissary and Sam Noir from Image Comics. Good stuff by good people.

this first one was done with pitt brush pens. i wanted to try something a little different. i was going for mood/atmosphere, i'm not sure if it worked but that's why it's just a sketch. as far as this next one goes, yes it's the same one as below but i just thought i'd get some more practice in color wise. pencils/inks, then digital colors.

haven't drawn the 'brats' as kids in awhile, so this morning i decided to warm up with them...

i'm trying to get better at the whole digital coloring, so what i've done is take this morning's warmup pencil sketch and applied some simple colors. no inks, nothing fancy. not only am i looking for quality, but i'm also getting more comfortable and gaining speed.

some of the first comics i was ever intoduced to were Guardians of the Galaxy by none other than Jim Vanlentino.
i've always been a space epic geek, and have recently been revisiting those old issues trying to reimagine those
characters. maybe someday Marvel will hire me and let me have creative reign over these wonder characters...
and maybe Silver Surfer too....:)

i'm not entirely sure where this idea came from, but as i kept sketching and jotting notes down it got more and more interesting to me. maybe i'll flesh some of these ideas out someday. for now, it's just a silly sketch.

these are sketches of two charaters created by my friend and writer Jeff Stevenson (of Scrypic Studios and Task Force One fame)
they are going to be the main charaters for a new webcomic Jeff and I will be starting up after the first of the year...
so you're all getting in on the ground floor with this one.

there will probably be plenty more of these two around here as the stories develop.
